Small electronic component in a clear container on a wooden surface

What is it?

Based off of Ted Yapo's Tritiled project.

Goal? Incredibly dim light, lasts forever. On the lowest setting, a CR2032 battery should last 2 years or longer.

I use it to prevent stubbing my toe in a dark room. I am an incredibly sensitive sleeper with blackout blinds - with the LED pointing downwards and at the lowest setting, it is perfect. It is barely visible.

Why green? The human eye is most sensitive to green. This means we can use less power for it to be perceivable. Using red would require more power, and thus the battery would not last as long.

It uses a high quality CREE LED, as well as an incredibly low power microprocessor, which unfortunately adds to the overall cost.

How to use

  1. Insert battery
  2. The light will come on at the brightest setting, level 1.
  3. Push the button once to lower it 1 level. There are 10 total levels.
  4. Since it starts at level 1, push the button 9 times to go to the dimmest level.
  5. The light will flash a number of times - this is the brightness level. It will do this sequence 3 times, and at this point, it is now locked in this mode.

If you ever want to change brightness

  1. Remove battery
  2. *IMPORTANT* since this device uses such little power, with the battery removed, it will still continue to run for 10-20 seconds! You need to wait until it is completely off.
  3. Repeat the steps above
